A prayer

This has been hanging in my dining room as long as I've had my own place. Before that, it hung in my grandmother's dining room. One time when we were visiting, I mentioned that I liked it. She packed it up and sent it to me later.

English translation:
In Jesus Name
We go to the Table;
To Eat and Drink
By Thy Word
To God the Honor,
Us the Given,
We receive the Food.
In Jesus Name
Amen

My grandmother is Swedish. Both of her parents came from the "old country" by boat in the late 1800s. From what I know, this prayer came over with one of them. But it's not Swedish. Not normal Swedish, anyway.

I've been doing some checking into this, and it seems that this is Norwegian. How this came into our family and lodged itself in our history and traditions, I'm not sure. An interesting mystery to unravel.

Oooh cool. Heritage mysteries can be fun to unravel. My father's parents were Scandinavian too (from Swedish Lapland); their parents immigrated to the US when they were very young. As young adults my grandparents moved north to Alberta. My Dad still uses old Swedish curse words that he learned from his Father.

Swedish curse words are the best!

I've been trying to unravel the mystery of my family tree for years now as well. That's really messy. My mom's side is pretty well organized and I have some good resources. My dad's side, however, is the complete opposite. I think that all of my dad's brothers and sisters have all died, and the family was never very close to begin with, and just keeps spreading out. No one knows what the other has, or even what relatives exist. Fun!

That works. I guess I'm technically a quarter Swedish and then a whole bunch of other stuff mixed up together.

But I feel like 100% Carrie. :)
Maybe I can pass myself off as Argentine after a few years.
